The City of Charlotte is on the lookout for strategic partners in an ambitious endeavor to transform its transportation system and workforce. According to a recent release, the city's Office of Workforce Development is now accepting proposals for two grants designed to cultivate the necessary talent for forthcoming transportation projects. These grants fall under the umbrella of the Skilled to Build initiative, which is poised to enhance economic opportunity and impact across Mecklenburg County.

This workforce development drive is part of a larger scheme backed by the voter-approved one-cent sales tax referendum, set to generate an estimated $19.4 billion over 30 years. This revenue injection aims to overhaul public transport and roadway infrastructure across county bounds. "This is a historic opportunity for Charlotte, and, as we begin to enhance our transportation and transit system, we want to ensure that residents and businesses are equipped to meet the demand for upcoming jobs and infrastructure needs," Danielle Frazier, special assistant to the city manager for Workforce Development, told the City of Charlotte. The city's Mobility Workforce Readiness Plan is a forward-thinking strategy meant to address the surge in economic mobility effectively.

The first grant opportunity within the Talent Development and Training initiative is aimed at connecting Charlotte locals to quality training programs that lead to enduring employment in high-demand fields. Grant proposals are being solicited from organizations that can deliver educational and training programs tailored to sculpt a skilled workforce for the looming transportation infrastructure projects.

Under Employer Engagement and Training, both the Office of Workforce Development and the Office of Youth Opportunities are jointly seeking grant proposals. The aim is to construct a comprehensive workforce development effort inclusive of internships, job placement pipelines, and training grants for business employees. Prospective partners are expected to facilitate work-based learning opportunities for high school students, help employers find job-ready candidates, and provide training solutions to keep businesses competitive. A significant emphasis will be placed on transit and transportation infrastructure roles, highlighting the sector's growth potential and the city's commitment to connecting talent with burgeoning employment opportunities.
