After nearly three decades of gracing the Inner Harbor area with its expansive menu, The Cheesecake Factory is slated to close its location in Baltimore's Harborplace on January 24, 2026. In a step that will undoubtedly have an impact on the local workforce, approximately 115 jobs are poised to be affected by the closure. In a notice submitted to the Maryland Department of Labor on Thursday, as reported by Fox Baltimore, the company has started to address the closure's implications, offering existing staff opportunities for positions at other Cheesecake Factory venues.
The departure of The Cheesecake Factory from the once-bustling Harborplace, which has seen several businesses exit in recent years—including H&M, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., and P.F. Chang's—marks a continued trend in the area's commercial landscape evolution, this comes after the restaurant conducted an "extensive review and analysis," which ultimately led to the difficult decision to dissolve their Inner Harbor operations, according to a statement, detailed by WBAL-TV. The company expressed its appreciation for the community, stating, "We have truly enjoyed being a part of the Inner Harbor community over the last 29 years and hope to continue to serve all our Baltimore guests at our nearby restaurant locations."
Despite the evident challenges, including crime and a waning local economy as noted by Dr. Darius Irani, chief economist at the Regional Economics Studies Institute at Towson University, who commented to Fox Baltimore that "Harborplace has been in decline, on life support for about ten years now," the local officials remain hopeful about the area's revival. City Councilman Zac Blanchard sees promise in the upcoming developments, such as the new park set to be constructed on the south side of the Inner Harbor, and a significant redevelopment project in the works for Harborplace.
Harborplace's future, although fraught with concerns over downtown retail vacancy and public safety, is being met with substantial investments, like the $500,000 project at Top of the World and a comprehensive $1 billion redevelopment plan that includes new residential towers, according to WBAL-TV.
