The city of Chicago witnessed a spate of gun violence that marred the holiday season, with the latest incident occurring in the usually bustling neighborhood of River North. According to Chicago Sun-Times, from the beginning of the long holiday weekend, at least 28 individuals were shot, six of whom died from their injuries in various incidents across the city.
Early Sunday, the violent trend culminated in a fatal shooting that left one man dead and three others critically injured on the 400 block of North La Salle Drive at approximately 2:30 a.m. "The victims were getting into a green Lamborghini... when four gunmen walked up and opened fire," Chicago police reported. All injured parties were quickly transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where a 34-year-old man was pronounced dead, while his companions remain in critical condition. No arrests have been reported in connection with the River North shooting.
Additional details on this latest tragedy were provided by WGN-TV, noting that first responders performed immediate lifesaving actions, including CPR and applying a chest seal. A rideshare driver present at the scene during the shooting, Alberto Aquino, recounted to WGN-TV, "I heard a few shots, but I it sounded like those mufflers that just kind of go off." The complexity of the incident escalated as police revealed the suspects fled the scene before authorities arrived.
Cook County Crime Stoppers has announced a cash reward up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest. Witnesses or those with information about the shooting are encouraged to call 1-800-535-STOP (7867) or visit CPDTIP.com to submit an anonymous tip. The 18th District, where the River North incident occurred, had already experienced 21 shooting incidents, involving 25 victims, in 2024, with 2025 figures slightly down to 19 incidents but including the recent shooting that has significantly inflated the victim count.
