The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert detailing a spate of robberies, theft, and deceptive practices within the River North area, particularly affecting the 018th (Near North) District; these crimes have seen citizens duped into handing over their phones under the guise of making a donation or to engage in social media interactions, only to then fall victim to unauthorized financial transactions via Zelle or Apple Pay, and when resistance is met, it has escalated to physical force, the department warned in a statement obtained by Chicago Police Department's news release.
Several incidents have been reported in a condensed timeframe and location, all on the 600 block of North Dearborn, with occurrences on December 13, 20, and 21; the incidents taking place in the early morning hours, indicating a targeted pattern of behavior where the perpetrators, described as between 3-8 African American males aged 20 to 30 wearing dark clothing, lead victims to secluded areas or outnumber them to perpetrate the crimes, resulting in a heightened threat to personal safety and property for those in the area.
The police have advised the public to maintain a heightened awareness of their surroundings and to avoid giving easily exploitable attention to strangers, especially in terms of smartphone access that could compromise personal financial security, while also recommending that suspects or any unusual activity are reported immediately and that any distinct features of the offenders, including scars, tattoos, or particular ways of moving, should be noted to aid law enforcement.
Highlighting the importance of not engaging with or pursuing the offenders for personal safety, the police further emphasize that anyone who finds themselves in such a situation should dial 9-1-1, provide detailed information without delay, and seek to preserve any video evidence, if available, police have also stressed the value of gathering contact information from anyone who may witness the incident to bolster the investigative process and aid in the timely apprehension of the culprits responsible for these deceptive and forceful acts.
