A man was fatally shot by Chicago police late Tuesday night during a confrontation while officers investigated a stolen car in the Arcadia Terrace neighborhood on the city's north side. The Chicago Police Department reported that tactical officers detected an unoccupied stolen sedan parked in the 5700 block of North Washtenaw Avenue around 10:25 p.m., according to NBC Chicago.
As officers were on the scene, another vehicle arrived, and two men and a woman exited the sedan and tried to access the stolen car. Police intervened, and one of the suspects fled on foot. Per CBS News, another suspect re-entered the sedan, taking the driver's seat, and disregarded officers' orders to exit the vehicle. In the ensuing altercation, he accelerated, dragging an officer, who then fired a single shot, striking the man in the head.
The car subsequently collided with a parked vehicle and was brought to a halt. The man who was shot, whose identity has not been released, was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. A woman associated with the scene was taken into custody, and officers recovered two firearms at the location. The suspect who had run from the scene remains at large.
Meanwhile, the officer involved in the shooting sustained minor injuries during the incident and was treated at a hospital. According to NBC Chicago, the officer is now on administrative duty pending an investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), joined by the Investigative Response Team, to determine the precise circumstances of the shooting.
The areas around the incident were cordoned off with yellow police tape as investigations proceeded, and photographs and video coverage depicted a substantial police presence at the scene. For now, further details about the incident remain limited as the COPA investigation continues.
