Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom and representatives from the Regional Flood Control District gathered recently to recognize a significant stride in flood mitigation with the unveiling of the Jim McGaughey Detention Basin, Collection, and Outfall.
The $21.3 million endeavor, placed strategically near Owens Avenue and Los Feliz Boulevard in District E, has been established to curtail the recurring deluges that have historically plagued the East Las Vegas Valley, as reported by Clark County Nevada.

This new infrastructure is more than a utilitarian response to a persistent hazard; it stands as a tribute to the late Assemblyman Jim McGaughey, a man whose foresight in 1985 presaged the creation of proactive flood control measures throughout Nevada. It was his legislation, along with the efforts of Commissioner Bruce Woodbury, that authored a new chapter of environmental security for Clark County’s denizens. According to a social media post from Clark County Nevada, the celebration marked not only a project's completion but also a continuation of McGaughey's legacy.
