The health saga of Cleveland Browns legend Bernie Kosar continues as he finds himself back in the hospital following a liver transplant operation. On November 30, Kosar shared on social media his disappointment at this setback but maintained an optimistic outlook. He stated, "trying to stay positive," according to WKYC, a post he made. Kosar's updates, a mix of hopefulness and reality, have included the emblematic "Let's have a winning day" and reminders to his followers that "U matter."
After being discharged from University Hospitals on November 24, returning only for a "liver blood check" on Friday, Kosar announced he was hospitalized again, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. The need for his liver transplant was the culmination of years of health struggles, including a diagnosis of cirrhosis and Parkinson’s disease, which Kosar revealed last year in Cleveland Magazine. Despite the need for his personal battle against these challenges, Kosar remains steadfast in contributing to the community that supports him, donating $25,000 to the family of his organ donor, the late Bryce Dunlap, on Thanksgiving Day.
Not only has Kosar been vocal about his own condition, but his gesture of gratitude to the Dunlaps was described as a "full-circle moment of gratitude, healing, and love," underlining the profound connection between donor families and transplant recipients, WKYC reported. Kosar's actions serve as a heartfelt acknowledgment of the second chance at life afforded to him through the generosity of others, reinforcing a bond that extends beyond the clinical aspects of organ donation.
While the precise reason for Kosar’s return to the hospital remains undisclosed, it adds another chapter to the story of a man whose legacy in Cleveland extends far beyond his football career, which itself included three AFC championships and a nearly 22,000-yard, 116-touchdown tenure with the Browns. The former Miami Hurricane, whose NFL journey began with a push to join the Browns through the Supplemental NFL draft, now faces a different kind of drive—one characterized by resilience and gratitude, as he conveys through his frequent social media engagements sitting next to a hospital bed, Dawgs By Nature reports. His continued updates remain a source of inspiration, and as information becomes available, Browns fans and the broader public alike hold their breath for more positive news.
