Five teenagers were arrested in Cleveland after a nighttime break-in at the historic Rockefeller building, as reported by multiple sources. The group of teens, whose ages range from 16 to 18, was apprehended following reports of vandalism and suspicious activity in the area of 614 W. Superior Ave. FOX 8 detailed that two individuals were initially spotted near broken glass and attempted to flee, but were quickly captured by authorities.
Police were called to the scene around midnight Monday, and upon arrival, they witnessed the ongoing destruction. An officer described over police radio transmissions how the suspects were "still smashing out windows, throwing things out that are landing out into the middle of the street." The trespassers seemingly aimed to wantonly demolish the neglected structure in what was an overt defiance of the law. The Cleveland 19 report highlighted the citation of the parents for curfew violations, underscoring the city's ordinance, which dictates that teenagers 16 and 17 must be home by midnight.
The arrests come on the heels of Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb's announcement regarding the city's RISE initiative, a crime prevention program aiming to reduce such incidents. Addressing the issue, Mayor Bibb stated, "Where is the system failing them and how do we bring the county, the state, our foundation partners, and the business community to the table to deter that because too many young people are getting caught up," in a statement obtained by Cleveland 19.
The suspects now face charges including criminal trespass, obstructing justice, and possession of criminal tools. While four juveniles were released to their parents with the added burden of citations, the 18-year-old involved will be charged as an adult for related crimes, with charges still pending. According to WKYC, these charges include vandalism and breaking and entering, adding a harsher reality to what began for these youths as a night of misdirected adventure.
