As America gears up for its 250th birthday bash, the people of Collierville are rolling up their sleeves. Mayor Maureen Fraser has committed the town to a greener future by signing Keep America Beautiful's Greatest American Cleanup pledge. In a move that's all about civic pride and environmental stewardship, Fraser declared, "This pledge shows our commitment to a cleaner, greener Collierville. I encourage all residents to participate and take pride in our Town as we prepare for America’s 250th birthday," according to Collierville's official news release.
Backing up the Mayor's words was the Board of Mayor and Aldermen and Keep Tennessee Beautiful Executive Director Missy Marshall, who doubles as a town alderman. In a statement obtained by Collierville's news outlet, Marshall underlined the importance of leading the charge against litter, saying, "This is an important step in rallying our community to participate in the Greatest American Cleanup." She went on to urge leaders across Tennessee to sign the pledge and embark on the quest to clean up America.
The Greatest American Cleanup has a bold goal: the tall order of removing 25 billion pieces of litter from public spaces before July 4, 2026. This initiative isn't limited to colossal efforts by big organizations; it's also a call to arms for the everyday groups – non-profits, schools, clubs – all are invited to help spruce up their corners of the nation. Mayor Fraser has been leading by example, recently joining a Collierville cleanup event that was part of the TDOT's No Trash November initiative and the Nobody Trashes Tennessee campaign.
Keep America Beautiful's president and CEO, Jennifer Lawson, lavished praise on Collierville's commitment, noting, "We couldn't be more pleased that Mayor Fraser and the Town of Collierville have pledged support for the Greatest American Cleanup as we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th birthday," according to an official announcement from the Town of Collierville. Lawson is optimistic about the inspirational ripple effect Collierville's involvement could have on other communities. And so, with litter grabbers in hand, the Town Beautiful Commission members and the Board threw themselves into the trenches, showing that for this Tennessee town, action and commitment are the same.
At a recent Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting, Fraser and her fellow board members solidified their environmental resolve. They were seen donning gloves and filling bags with discarded trash, a possible snapshot of what the future holds for Collierville and perhaps, a sign of the greater consciousness taking hold across America. The initiative extends beyond the symbolic; it's a testament to the willingness to maintain and elevate the town's aesthetic and environmental appeal. As shown in images shared by the town, the local leaders' cleanup efforts before Thanksgiving highlighted not just the pledge, but a pledge put into practice, as they trailblazed their commitment to a cleaner community. The actions taken by Fraser, Marshall, and their colleagues are, perhaps, a blueprint for other locales eyeing the same goal of a cleaner, greener America. With 250 years of history behind it, Collierville is setting its sights on a sustainable future.
