The collection, which was announced by Governor Jared Polis and key cultural institutions, serves as a testament to the significant role these poets have played in shaping Colorado's artistic and cultural narrative. The project unites the efforts of Colorado Creative Industries, Colorado Humanities, and The Colorado Poet Laureate Anthology, emanating a shared commitment to bolstering the state's creative legacy.
With a focus on accessibility and community engagement, "Begin Where You Are" aims to extend the reach of the Poet Laureate's influence beyond urban centers. The book sales' proceeds will establish an endowment for the Colorado Poet Laureate position, broadening its impact, particularly in rural areas. As obtained by the Colorado Governor's Office, Polis highlighted "the arts tell the story of who we are, a narrative that is essential to the Colorado spirit." The launch party for the anthology will take place at Petals & Pages Bookstore, promising attendees an immersive literary experience with book signings and poetry readings.
As Colorado gears up to nominate its 11th Poet Laureate, the anthology also aligns with the vision of commemorating the America 250 Colorado 150 Commemoration, a call to explore our collective past and foster a vision for the future. This sentiment was echoed by Josh Blanchard, Director of CCI, who told Colorado Governor's Office, "Poets laureate play a unique and important role uplifting arts and culture in Colorado. In line with the community-centric ethos, the authors involved with "Begin Where You Are" have foregone their royalties, directing 100% of the book's proceeds to the poet laureate endowment. Turner Wyatt, director of The Colorado Poets Laureate Anthology, communicated the hope that readers will not only appreciate the exceptional writing but also embrace the mission to broaden the poet laureate's outreach. The anthology will be distributed by the University Press of Colorado, further cementing this initiative's commitment to nurturing the state's literary heritage.
