As the winter chill sets in, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is reaching out to nature enthusiasts with an important reminder to check for trail closures on the Colorado Trail Explorer (COTREX) mobile app. The app offers up-to-date information on trail closures for areas that serve as winter sanctuaries for local wildlife, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife. As outdoor activities gain popularity, awareness of these closures becomes crucial for the survival of species braving the harsh winter.
COTREX isn't just a random assortment of trail maps; it's a unified resource aggregating authoritative data across local, state, and federal agencies. Joe O’Brien, State Trails Program Coordinator, emphasized the app's singular resourcefulness, stating, "COTREX is the only app in Colorado that displays all of this seasonal wildlife closure information in a single place," per Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The digital tool aims to blend convenience with conservation, making it easier for the public to practice responsible recreation while giving wildlife the space they need to survive the colder months, as reported.
Winter conditions can be grueling for animals such as deer and elk, for whom every calorie is a precious commodity in the struggle for survival. CPW underscores the importance of being mindful of these seasonal closures, not just for the sake of legal compliance but to ensure that human activity doesn't displace wildlife into areas that lack proper sustenance or protection.
More than 36 agencies collaborate with COTREX to provide a stream of current advisories. This includes not just trail closures, but also safety hazards and other vital trail alerts. "We hope this effort makes it easier for recreators to understand where they can go, and where they should give wildlife space during the winter," O’Brien told Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Whether planning a snowshoe expedition or a cross-country ski adventure, users can rely on COTREX for detailed information and trip recommendations throughout Colorado.
