In the spirit of Get Covered Colorado Day, Coloradans are being mobilized to sign up for health insurance for 2026, an initiative backed by state leadership pursuing a healthier community despite obstacles like surging premiums and federal aid uncertainties. In a statement from Governor Jared Polis, he emphasized his commitment to combating the private insurance cost hike, stating, "Colorado is stronger and healthier when every family has access to the care they need. In the face of rising premiums and the loss of federal enhanced premium tax credits, we’ve taken action," as per the Colorado Governor's Office. Polis referred to the law he signed during a Special Session aimed to help keep residents insured through mechanisms like Colorado Premium Assistance.
Even though enrollment for 2026 stands slightly lower than last year's figures, Kevin Patterson, CEO of Connect for Health Colorado, remarked, "Our message today is simple: we’re here to help every Coloradan get covered," as obtained by the Colorado Governor's Office. According to the official release, approximately 210,139 residents have enrolled since November 1st, marking a near 5% decrease in enrollments from the same period last year. Factors like increased premiums and the potential end of federal Premium Tax Credits are considered responsible for this dip. Additionally, changes in eligibility have led to fewer people being automatically renewed this year.
Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera echoed the sentiments on the importance of coverage, highlighting that health coverage is crucial for individuals to manage chronic conditions and access quality care. "Get Covered Colorado Day is about making sure every Coloradan has the information and support they need to stay insured," Primavera told the Colorado Governor's Office. With a December 15 deadline for coverage that begins on January 1st, Coloradans are urged to act swiftly to avoid a lapse in their healthcare coverage.
Despite these challenges, Connect for Health Colorado remains a pivotal resource, being the exclusive hub for residents seeking financial help for health insurance purchases. They estimate that 65% of customers are eligible for financial assistance for plan year 2026. Plans offered by six insurance companies are on the table, including Colorado Option plans that feature compelling benefits like $0 for certain doctor visits.
