In observance of Older Driver Safety Awareness Week, spanning from December 1 to December 5, the Colorado State Patrol is steering attention to the increased risks faced by senior drivers on the road. A recent study examining crash data from 2021 to 2024 shows a sobering trend: Drivers aged 70 and above have a fatality rate twice as high as any other group, according to a report by the Colorado State Patrol released early this December.
"A driver’s risk of death from a crash increases as we age," Col. Matthew C. Packard, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol, said in the report. Highlighting the vulnerability of older individuals due to the natural decline in physical ability and slower healing times, it's a grim reminder that the same road trekked by all beckons caution, especially for those who've journeyed the longest.
The study also dissected the primary causes for at-fault fatal crashes involving this demographic. Topping the list were lane violations, followed by distracted driving and failing to yield the right of way. These findings suggest that physical and cognitive functions, like vision, hearing, reflexes, memory, and overall physical abilities, are essential concerns that senior drivers should monitor, "Getting older doesn’t mean you have to hang up your keys automatically; every person is different, and you need to be aware and honest about your individual capabilities," Col. Packard advised in the aforementioned report.
As part of the awareness week, the Colorado State Patrol is focusing on educating older drivers and their loved ones about safe driving practices. The goal is not to sweep keys from the hands of our seniors, who treasure their independence, but rather to ensure that their years behind the wheel advance safely.
