A Dacula man has been handed a two-decade sentence for his crimes involving the sexual exploitation of minors. Johann Rainer Nix, age 36, will spend 20 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of production of child sexual abuse material, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia.

Officials have reported that through 2022 and 2023, Nix used to regularly exploit popular social media apps to groom and entice minors into producing and sending sexually explicit imagery to him. He was convicted of coercing four children who he met online, also having sent them unsolicited photographs of his genitalia.

In response to the conviction, U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg highlighted the predatory dangers that loom over social media, advising, “Parents should monitor their children’s social media use because predators like Nix are lurking online. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to pursue, arrest, and prosecute child sex offenders like Nix.” The case against Nix was a result of the combined efforts of federal law enforcement and prosecuting bodies, part of Project Safe Childhood—a nationwide initiative aiming to shield children from online exploitation and abuse launched in February 2006, according to the same press release.

FBI Atlanta's Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown emphasized the bureau's dedication to combating such crimes, stating, "Nix exploited vulnerable minors on social media for his depraved desires, and the FBI will relentlessly use every tool at our disposal to put predators like him behind bars." He also encouraged parents to actively supervise their children’s social media activity and maintain open discussions about online safety to keep them safe from potential predators, as noted by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Following his prison term, Nix will be subjected to a lifetime of supervised release. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lauren E. Renaud and L. Skye Davis led the prosecution of the case.
