A tumultuous day unfolded for travelers at Nashville International Airport following a crippling rollover crash on Interstate 40 near Briley Parkway. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) first reported the wreck, which occurred yesterday, around the busy post-Thanksgiving Sunday, a notoriously heavy travel period. According to a report by The Tennessean, I-40 westbound lanes remained closed well into the afternoon as crews diverted traffic to the Briley Parkway exit in the wake of the accident.
Further complications arose when TDOT spokesperson Erin Zeigler announced that the exit ramp from SR-155 North (Briley Parkway) to I-40 West (Exit 6) remained closed after the main lanes had reopened. The disruption, first captured by NewsChannel 5, added to the overall congestion affecting travelers striving to catch their flights out of the airport.
Residents and travelers alike bore the brunt of the gridlock, with many resorting to alternate routes to reach the airport. Dr. Alan Dias recounted to WKRN, "It was absolutely packed getting into the airport, so we had to find a different way to get here and had to sneak around to the parking garage and get dropped off in there." Nashville resident Sten Brooks, frustrated by the recurrent delays, mentioned in an interview with the same outlet, "We took every which way to try to get in here and could not get in the airport and missed a flight three weeks ago."
Tragedy struck as the rollover incident claimed the life of the semi-truck driver involved, reports indicated. Debris from the overturned vehicle compounded the issue, extending backup times as reported by WKRN. In a testimony of human determination, some individuals exited their vehicles and walked to the airport in a bid to make their flights.
