After years of uncertainty and unresolved heartache, a breakthrough in a decades-old murder case has emerged, bringing some solace to a family that has waited far too long for answers. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has announced the resolution of Rhonda Marie Fisher's 1987 homicide, one of several cold cases closed in recent years by their dedicated team of investigators.
On a fateful day back in '87, the body of Fisher was found discarded down an embankment by a motorist; she had suffered sexual assault and strangulation. Despite exhaustful efforts and the advancements in forensic science, it wasn't until a recent re-examination of evidence led to a CODIS match that investigators were able to link Fisher's murder to serial killer Vincent Darrell Groves, as reported by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
Groves, who died in prison back in 1996, had earlier been convicted for other murders and was connected with at least 12 homicides as well as an attempted murder and a sexual assault. His involvement in Fisher's case, finally determined through DNA found on preserved evidence nearly 40 years old, points to a meticulous preservation effort and continuous reevaluation of cold cases by law enforcement, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
"While Vincent Groves cannot be held accountable in a court of law, we hope this long-awaited resolution brings answers and a measure of peace to Rhonda Fisher’s family and friends," Darren Weekly, Douglas County Sheriff, conveyed in a message to the public. The news underscores an ongoing commitment by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to solving cold cases, applying new forensic technologies, and maintaining a focus on justice for every victim.
With Fisher's case closed, the Sheriff's Office continues to stand firm in its resolve to bring closure to more families, leveraging evolving science to uncover truths hidden by time.
