This coming Tuesday, December 9, at 4 p.m., Duluth's men and women in blue will be seen pushing shopping carts instead of patrol cars as they take part in the festive "Blue Santa Shop with a Cop" event at the local Target on Miller Trunk Highway, with the intention of making the holiday season a little brighter for families in need.
Not just a mere token of generosity, the program, organized by the Duluth Police Department and in partnership with multiple community outreach groups, facilitates a shopping spree for underprivileged kids, where each one of them, hand-in-hand with an officer, gets to experience the joy of choosing their own holiday gifts—and this year it's all about bringing smiles to the faces of 32 families and children from around the community, a wholesome affair indeed but where the warmth doesn't stop at gadgets and toys.
The magnanimity of the Irving Community Club shines through with their hefty contribution, an impressive donation of $10,000, with a portion of these funds, along with additional support from the Gary New Duluth Community Club, earmarked for 28 of the families to receive gift cards for Super One, ensuring their holiday tables will be as laden as their hearts are light. As the official announcement from the Duluth Police Department declares, "hopefully take the stress of the holiday season off families so they can enjoy the time with their loved ones."
Open to the mediating eye of the press, the event extends an invitation to the media, encouraging coverage of this annual yuletide outreach—a scene set to unfold where officers and community members come together, not in the sterile confines of routine or policy, but amidst the laughter of children, the rustle of gift wrap, and the soft glow of holiday lights that bespeak of joy that knows no uniform.
