A tense series of events unfolded in Gilbert this past Saturday, as police were dispatched to the 900 block of South Deerfield Lane after receiving calls about a shooting just before 8 PM; there, they discovered a 16-year-old boy with serious injuries, who was quickly taken to the hospital and remains in a critical condition.
The suspect, 21-year-old Rael Sanchez, was reported by Gilbert Town Hall's news release to have been visiting family at the same residence as the victim, who was there to see his girlfriend. Sanchez is said to have been behaving erratically, was seen with a firearm, and fled the scene following the shooting incident.
Sanchez's freedom was short-lived, as the very next day, police in Phoenix encountered him during an unrelated incident, after which he was hospitalized, released, and then apprehended by Gilbert police detectives. Charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder, Sanchez now resides within the confines of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, according to the same news release.
As the legal process moves forward, attention remains fixed on the young victim, whose condition is described as critical, prompting an outpouring of concern and hope for his recovery.
