Tennis enthusiasts in Durham can look forward to a brighter future, quite literally. The City of Durham, NC Government announced via social media an upgrade to the tennis court lighting at Rock Quarry Park and Whippoorwill Park, a move aimed at enhancing player safety and enjoyment for those evening matches. The announcement, which appeared on Bull City Today, details the shift from the current, outdated systems to new, energy-efficient LED lighting.
The current systems at both parks have been deemed ready for retirement, having served their time. But, they're not just getting any old replacements. The city will be installing a high-tech lighting system by Musco, a trusted name if you're in the know about sports lighting. This system isn't just bright, it's also smart, allowing remote scheduling and monitoring—a feature that's as about as 21st century as you can get.
As for the price tag of basking in this new glow, taxpayers might be curious. Rock Quarry Park's lighting system rings in at approximately $795,000, while Whippoorwill Park's upgrade will cost about $598,000. It's not pocket change, but investments in city infrastructure often come with hefty figures. The new LED lights are slated for installation by the spring.
