Eagle Lake Man Charged with Aggravated Child Abuse for Critically Injuring Infant, Sheriff Calls for Full ProsecutionPolk County Sheriff’s Office

An Eagle Lake man is now in custody facing severe charges following the critical injury of a three-month-old baby. The Polk County Sheriff's Office has charged 24-year-old Zachary Ingram with aggravated child abuse—a first-degree felony. According to an article from the sheriff's department, the investigation began on November 26, when a distressing 911 call reported an unresponsive infant.

The baby, discovered pale and unresponsive by Ingram, was initially thought to have been sleeping in a swing when the incident occurred. After being transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, serious injuries including brain hemorrhages and retinal bleeding were uncovered. Walking to the bathroom, Ingram alleged that he left the baby for 10-15 minutes, he noticed the child's concerning state upon his return.

Inconsistent accounts of the events leading up to the baby's conditions emerged during the investigation. Initially, there were mentions of an incident involving a two-year-old with a rattle, as well as a separate occasion where the mother purportedly tripped while holding the baby. However, after further probing, Ingram admitted to detectives that he shook the baby more vigorously than he intended. The police confirmed through video footage from local stores that the mother was not at home when the baby sustained the injuries, ascertaining that Ingram was alone with the child during that time.

The gravity of the baby's condition was detailed in an affidavit citing medical evaluation reports and expertise by healthcare professionals. Dr. Rexine of Saint Joseph's Hospital and Nurse Jennifer Santana with the Hillsborough County Child Protection Team confirmed the injuries were typical of severe child abuse. Coming out of the bathroom, the caregiver saw the situation had changed drastically, speaking to the potential impact of mere minutes of negligent care, the report noted.

Zachary Ingram was arrested yesterday and detained on charges of aggravated child abuse (F1), with his first appearance hearing scheduled for the afternoon of the next day. Sheriff Grady Judd expressed his distress over the incident, saying, "The abuse that this baby suffered at the hands of his caregiver is simply unfathomable. We pray that this baby is able to recover from his significant injuries, and that the suspect is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," as per the sheriff's office release.
