A neighborhood dispute in Houston’s East End turned fatal Wednesday evening when a man was shot near downtown and later died at the hospital, according to police. Officers were called to the 3400 block of Denver Street, near Sampson, where they found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Not long after officers arrived, another man came forward, surrendered to police, and told investigators he had fired the shots, claiming he acted in self-defense. Homicide detectives remained at the scene into the night as the investigation continued.
Police Say Victim Died at Hospital
According to the Houston Chronicle, the Houston Police Department posted on X that the “Victim is deceased at the hospital.” The outlet reported that a possible suspect was in custody but noted that initial details from authorities were sparse. The brief article, written by Michael Garcia, was published on Dec. 24.
Suspect Turned Himself In, Claims Self-Defense
Local station ABC13 reported that the shooting unfolded at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The man who turned himself in told police he had fired in self-defense, according to the station.
ABC13 added that homicide investigators interviewed witnesses at the scene as they gathered statements. The station also reported that the Harris County District Attorney’s Office will decide whether to file charges directly or present the case to a grand jury.
Investigators Will Present Evidence to Prosecutors
Click2Houston reported that HPD Lt. Larry Crowson said the alleged shooter told officers the two men had been arguing before the gunfire. According to Crowson, detectives are compiling both witness statements and physical evidence.
He told reporters that homicide investigators will present their findings to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for a charging review, Click2Houston noted. Police have not yet released the names of the victim or the man in custody.
Holiday Stretch Adds Pressure on Investigators
The East End killing landed in the middle of an already tense holiday stretch for Houston authorities. On the same day, another body was recovered from Buffalo Bayou, according to the Houston Chronicle.
As detectives work through the Denver Street case, they continue piecing together witness accounts while juggling multiple investigations in a busy week for Houston homicide teams.
