A man from East Flatbush has been sentenced to 15 years in prison following a Brooklyn Supreme Court trial for a 2023 attack on his ex-girlfriend. According to the Brooklyn District Attorney's office, Darren Brathwaite was convicted of kidnapping, attempted assault, robbery, assault, and unlawful imprisonment. Justice Elizabeth Warin imposed the sentence after a jury found him guilty earlier this year.
Brathwaite, 39, waited outside the victim’s workplace in April 2023 and offered her a ride under false pretenses. After the victim rejected Brathwaite’s attempts to rekindle their relationship, the encounter escalated into violence. The woman was choked, stabbed, and later left on the side of the Wantagh State Parkway in Long Island.
The victim feigned death, which temporarily stopped the attack. Brathwaite returned and assaulted her again before leaving the scene. Despite multiple stab wounds, she was able to flag down a New York State Trooper and was subsequently treated at Nassau University Medical Center.
After the incident, Brathwaite fled to Atlantic City, where he was arrested by local police on May 2, 2023. The arrest followed a coordinated effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the NYPD 67th Precinct Detective Squad and the Brooklyn South Warrant Squad.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez stated that his office remains committed to supporting survivors of domestic violence. Prosecutors Jessica Soares and Lawrence Newman, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Kori Medow, handled the case against Brathwaite.
