Early this morning, a fire engulfed an East Huntingdon home as firefighters faced snow and frigid temperatures, battling the blaze that ultimately led to the destruction of the residence. TribLIVE reported that the incident occurred around 7 a.m. on Mt. Pleasant Road, with three individuals making a narrow escape from the flames.

East Huntingdon fire Chief Rich DeForrest said the home was "fully engulfed" upon the firefighters' arrival, necessitating an external attack on the flames. "We weren’t able to get in the house," DeForrest stated, as detailed by TribLIVE. Resident, Amanda Jenkins, reported hearing yelling and beeping, and upon investigation saw smoke as three bystanders aided the occupants' escape. "I just feel so bad," Jenkins said, reflecting on the harrowing situation, as snow continued to fall and firefighters endeavored to douse the flames.

In addition to the human toll, there were initial concerns about the pets within the residence. WPXI reported that as of their latest updates, the animals had not been found. One of the residents did, however, receive treatment by emergency medical services at the scene, though specifics on their condition or the potential whereabouts of the pets remained uncertain.

Weather conditions compounded the challenges faced by responders, with temperatures hovering near 20 degrees, and a live power line briefly presenting an added hazard next to the home. Despite the elements, Fayette EMS was quick to set up a warming tent to combat the risk of hypothermia or frostbite that firefighters faced. The fire marshal has launched an investigation into the origin of the fire, which is not currently believed to be suspicious.
