A man is dead after a shooting on Kankakee's east side Sunday evening, and detectives are now trying to piece together how a reported break-in ended with fatal gunfire.

Police say officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of East Oak Street at about 5:51 p.m. for a report of shots fired. When they arrived, they found a 35-year-old man lying outside an apartment. Medics took him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

What the police say happened

According to a news release, a resident of the building called dispatch to report that someone was trying to break into his apartment and that a firearm had been discharged, as reported by Shaw Local. Detectives processed the scene, interviewed the resident involved in the shooting, and recovered the firearm believed to have been used. Police say evidence from the scene has been secured and sent for further testing.

As of Monday morning, authorities had not announced any arrests or filed charges. Investigators say the case remains active and open as they work to sort out what exactly unfolded before officers arrived.

Autopsy and coroner review

An autopsy was set for Monday, and the Kankakee County Coroner’s Office will handle the medical examination along with any toxicology testing that may be needed. The office investigates deaths within the county and is tasked with determining who died, as well as how and why that death occurred, with final results sometimes taking days or weeks, depending on the testing required, according to the Kankakee County Coroner’s Office.

Officials say they will release the official cause and manner of death once all examinations and testing are complete.

What Illinois law says

Illinois law allows a person to use force to defend themself or a dwelling if they reasonably believe it is necessary. The use of deadly force is limited to situations in which it is needed to prevent imminent death, great bodily harm, or the commission of certain forcible felonies, according to FindLaw.

Whether any force used in this case meets those legal standards will not be decided until investigators and the coroner complete their work. After that, prosecutors will review the investigative file to determine whether criminal charges are warranted.

Police seek tips and witnesses

Police say this is the fifth homicide in Kankakee so far this year, part of a series of violent cases the department has been handling in 2025, as reported by Shaw Local. Detectives are asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything to come forward.

Tipsters can contact the Kankakee Police Investigations Division at 815-933-0426 or reach Crime Stoppers at 815-932-7463. The city also offers an online anonymous tip form and public safety information on the City of Kankakee website.
