As El Paso County faces a heightened risk of wildfires due to dry, windy conditions and warm temperatures, Sheriff Joseph Roybal, serving as the Fire Warden, has taken preemptive action. In a bid to mitigate potential hazards, Sheriff Roybal has imposed Stage I Fire Restrictions across all unincorporated areas of the county. These restrictions, effective from 12 PM today, were decided upon after a detailed examination of the fire danger environment and in consultation with local fire chiefs. "The safety and well-being of our community is my top priority," Sheriff Roybal emphasized, as per the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

Under the Stage I Fire Restrictions, open burning is largely banned, with a few exceptions, such as fires within constructed fire grates at campgrounds and the usage of private charcoal grills and wood-burning stoves, provided they are utilized in a cleared space. Additionally, the ordinance prohibits the use of fireworks, outdoor smoking in non-enclosed areas, and the operation of an internal combustion engine lacking a proper spark-arresting device. Violations of these restrictions can be reported to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office at 719-390-5555.

With no significant change in humidity on the horizon, the Sheriff's office has highlighted the importance of community cooperation to avert fires. "As we move into restrictions, I ask for the community’s assistance in spreading awareness and following all restriction guidelines when enjoying Colorado’s abundant outdoor recreation and vast landscapes," Sheriff Roybal told the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. He stressed the collective effort needed to protect the region, which encompasses the Pikes Peak area known for its picturesque scenery and outdoor activities.
