Travelers who frequent the US 2 Stevens Pass should be ready for a longer haul to their destinations this holiday season. Following a series of washouts and mudslides that occurred last week, emergency repairs have kicked off to address the extensive damage. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews commenced their work yesterday, in a bid to eventually restore the critical mountain passageway.
It all began on Wednesday, when nature's wrath necessitated that WSDOT close the highway between Index and Coles Corner. According to an update from the WSDOT website, the situation escalated the next day, and Tumwater Canyon was also shut down to travelers. Maintenance crews managed to partially clear Skykomish by today, but the stretch between Skykomish and Leavenworth remains shuttered.
The emergency contract, awarded to Hurst Construction, zeroes in on a crucial 12-mile stretch over the summit of Stevens Pass, tackling road stabilization, debris clearance and drainage repairs. In the face of these urgent needs, the authorities have not yet hazarded a guess on when the road might again be open to the public, as detailed by the WSDOT.
Plans are on the drawing board for repair work on additional sections that were hit hard, notably in Tumwater Canyon and east of Skykomish. While commuters and residents may sigh at the inconveniences, they can stay updated by utilizing resources such as the WSDOT mobile app, the real-time travel map, or signing up for email updates and alerts. Indeed, the WSDOT mountain passes webpage is constantly keeping a pulse on both weather and highway conditions, offering current snapshots for those impacted by the repairs.
In today’s connected world, staying informed is key as US 2 over Stevens Pass remains closed. Until the road reopens between Index and Leavenworth, travelers are advised to be patient and check official updates regularly.
