Englewood residents applying for permits and planning need to be on high alert, as scammers are targeting applicants in and around Colorado. The city of Englewood has issued a warning following incidents where fraudsters have sent out phishing emails, posing as local government communications; these shady dealings include fake invoices and threats of fines or enforcement actions.
While these emails might come across as authentic, since they often include details gleaned from public records, like names and addresses, the city of Englewood has made it clear that its official correspondence methods are limited and secured. Payments to the city are only accepted through their approved online payment systems, by check, or in person at city facilities. This ensures that residents aren't fooled into handing over their hard-earned cash to deceitful characters.
In a statement obtained by the City of Englewood, a key identifier to spot a real email from the city is to check the sender's email address, which should always end in @englewoodco.gov. To be doubly safe, citizens are urged to approach any email that feels urgent or unexpected with caution, and importantly, avoid replying, clicking on links, or providing any personal or financial details unless absolutely certain of its legitimacy.
