Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore was placed under arrest mere hours after his termination from the university yesterday. According to CBS News Detroit, Moore was booked into Washtenaw County Jail after an assault allegation in a town outside Ann Arbor.
Michigan's athletic director, Warde Manuel, released a statement earlier in the day confirming Moore’s dismissal due to "credible evidence" of an inappropriate relationship with a university staff member. "This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior," Manuel stated, as reported by Detroit Free Press. The investigation into Moore seems to have quickly escalated, with overwhelming evidence leading to a swift turn over to the police.
In the wake of these events, Biff Poggi has been appointed as interim coach for Michigan’s football team. Poggi previously held an associate coaching position at Michigan and temporarily stepped up earlier this season while Moore was under suspension. The team is currently preparing to face No. 13 Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year's Eve, as additional details about Moore's situation continue to unfold.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault for which Moore was jailed remain unclear, with local police stating that they are prohibited from releasing further information to maintain the integrity of their investigation. "The suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor," Pittsfield Township police stated in an announcement obtained by ESPN. It is highlighted that the incident does not appear to be random and poses no ongoing threat to the community.
Moore's tenure as head football coach saw the Wolverines to a combined 17-8 record over two seasons, with significant achievements including a victory in last year's ReliaQuest Bowl. The recent turn of events places a cloud over a brief but notably effective coaching period. As the legal process unfolds, the university and its football program must now navigate the fallout of this scandal and the enforcement of their stated zero-tolerance policy.
