An incident in Apache Junction led to police seizing explosives on Dec. 10, after dealing with a "subject in crisis." Officers initially responded to the area of Apache Trail and Ocotillo Drive, FOX 10 Phoenix reported. The Apache Junction Police Department (AJPD) credited the de-escalation of the situation to the officers who provided reassurance and support to the individual involved.
According to the same source, it was during this engagement that the individual, whose crisis unfolded near a drug and alcohol addiction treatment center, informed the officers of the presence of dynamite in their vehicle. This prompted the officers to request assistance from the City of Mesa Police Department's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit.
The EOD team conducted an investigation at the scene, which led to the discovery of the explosives. As reported by 12 News, the identified materials were safely seized, ensuring no further threat to community safety. "Officers took time to build rapport with the individual," AJPD stated, a factor that was vital in achieving a non-violent resolution and the safe removal of the dynamite.
Following the successful intervention, the individual at the center of the incident was connected with mental health services and taken to crisis healthcare, with no injuries occurring during the events, both sources indicated. The AJPD has not indicated that there is an ongoing threat to the community at this time. Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the intent behind the presence of the explosives, and the establishment of the mental health support structures is a continuing priority for the Apache Junction community.
