A sobering holiday incident took place in Kitsap County on Christmas Eve when an SUV crashed into Sadie Mae's Coffee stand, resulting in injuries to a family of four. According to FOX 13 Seattle, the vehicle, driven by a 47-year-old man, veered off the road due to a medical emergency experienced by the driver.
The man's 47-year-old partner and two young children, ages 5 and 8, were also in the car at the time of the crash. As reported by MyNorthwest, the children, who were not wearing seatbelts, were taken to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, while the adults received treatment at Tacoma General Hospital. The crash caused additional infrastructure damage, with powerlines being knocked down and a sewage spill reported.
Trooper Katherine Weatherwax of the Washington State Patrol confirmed the details of the accident, including the fact that the driver is facing a charge of second-degree negligent driving. This detail came to light in a statement obtained by KOMO News. Despite the severity of the crash, it is reported by authorities that drugs or alcohol were not believed to be a factor.
Sadie, the owner of the coffee stand, expressed her gratitude that the business was closed at the time of the incident and that no additional people were inside the stand. “I’m kinda lost for words at the moment! So I will just start by saying I’m so grateful we were closed and the occupants of the car weren’t seriously injured!!” Sadie conveyed in a statement on social media, acknowledging the support from the community and asking for continued prayers, as noted by MyNorthwest.
The Department of Ecology was advised in the wake of the crash to assess and address the spilled sewage and infrastructure damage, a detail confirmed by multiple sources including FOX 13 Seattle and MyNorthwest.
