A multi-vehicle crash on I-57 in Coles County has resulted in a fatality and the closure of the southbound lanes near mile marker 203, reports News Channel 20. The Illinois State Police, who responded to the incident around 9:50 a.m. Saturday, are directing traffic away from the interstate at exit 203, indicating a closure that lasted through the afternoon.
Conditions along the I-57 turned perilous as winter weather descended upon the region, leading to at least nine crashes between Mattoon and Tuscola, including that fateful pileup before midday. Authorities from the Illinois Department of Transportation warned drivers of the treacherous road conditions, as captured by IDOT cameras, showing a veneer of snow and ice blanketing the highway, and advised motorists to defer non-essential travel, per a statement released on social media and echoed by NBC Chicago.
The severity of the winter storm and its impact, with the most considerable snowfall anticipated between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., prompted the National Weather Service to caution against travel. The combined forces of snowfall and below-freezing temperatures were forecast to concoct a mixture of hazardous conditions downstate, specifically below I-80, signaling a potential turmoil for drivers unprepared for such an Arctic embrace.
Following the grueling hours of closure, the interstate was finally reopened around 5:35 p.m. as confirmed by the Illinois State Police; however, recovery from the day's events will likely linger, with IDOT's counsel to "increase your following distance, and allow extra time to reach your destination," indicating the sustained after-effect of weather's conceivable chaos upon human endeavors, such was the scene on I-55 that also saw hours of closure after yet another pileup was reported by NBC Chicago.
