As the new year dawns, the District of Columbia gears up to host the Mayor’s FitDC Fresh Start 5K on January 1. The event aims to encourage residents to engage in physical activity and promote a healthier lifestyle in the New Year. With this noble objective, however, comes the necessary inconvenience of street closures and parking restrictions, which drivers in the area need to be aware of.
The Metropolitan Police Department has announced that several streets will be impacted from early morning hours until early afternoon. To ensure participants' safety, 'Emergency No Parking' signs will go up along South Capitol Street, Half Street, R Street, and Anacostia Drive starting from approximately 6:00 a.m. up until 1:00 p.m. Motorists are advised to be prepared to re-route or possibly to allow extra travel time.
Furthermore, closures will affect major thoroughfares, including parts of South Capitol Street, Potomac Avenue, Half Street, R Street, and Anacostia Drive, as stated by the Metropolitan Police Department. Residential traffic on Potomac Avenue from N Street to South Capitol Street, SE, will be allowed, but with restrictions. Those looking for further traffic updates or seeking alternative routes on January 1 can visit the dedicated website for real-time information.
