While the holiday hustle hits its zenith, travelers at Tampa International Airport (TPA) are experiencing a newly revived calming encounter, courtesy of The Florida Aquarium. Having disappeared for a moment in time due to construction, the renowned aquatic displays have made a splashy return to the Red and Blue Baggage Claim areas just as bags carousel and travelers bustle about.
In an endeavor to maintain protection for the aquatic residents during the nearby terminal commotion, The Florida Aquarium had temporarily removed these exhibits in the summer of 2024, but now with the construction fully wrapped, these underwater worlds have been carefully restored to their airport home. It's a move that's managed to simultaneously beautify the baggage claim experience and to re-aquaint passengers with a taste of Florida's marine life as soon as they step off the plane.
Travelers weary from their journeys can once again gaze upon the 2,000-gallon tanks hosting an array of fish species, a visual treat that The Florida Aquarium has been offering at TPA since 1998. Among the aquatic denizens are the blue striped grunts, porkfish, sharp nose puffers, and a French angelfish, creating a living mosaic of color and movement.
"The return of both exhibits restores a familiar and relaxing experience for travelers coming through Tampa," said Tim Binder, Senior Vice President of Animal Care & Health at The Florida Aquarium, according to their recent announcement. He added, "We’re grateful for our partnership with Tampa International Airport, as these exhibits reflect our shared commitment to exceptional animal care, conservation, and creating meaningful moments for our community and visitors."
With millions of people each year visiting The Florida Aquarium since its inception in 1995, it's clear that these exhibits act not merely as decor but as a first handshake with Tampa's natural allure.
