Last Saturday night in Lady Lake, Florida, police officers turned to drone technology to apprehend a man who fled the scene of a two-vehicle crash. ClickOrlando reported that after a Chevrolet Tahoe rear-ended a Ford F-150 on U.S. Highway 27/441, the driver of the Tahoe, 28-year-old Tyler Davis, abandoned his vehicle and escaped into the woods. The Lady Lake Police Department responded to the wreck and was informed by witnesses about Davis' flight.

The deserted Tahoe left clues behind, including ammunition, an empty prescription bottle, and items that tied the vehicle to Davis. Upon discovering Davis had fled, officers deployed a drone, which captured a heat signature amidst the dense foliage, directing them to the suspect's location. The drone's contribution to the pursuit was a pivotal point in the evening's events, leading officers to find Davis lying on the ground, injured, and appearing impaired, according to Villages-News.

Davis received medical attention at the scene before he was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center. Upon his release from the hospital and pending blood alcohol testing, he will face several charges. Among these are failing to stop for a crash involving bodily injuries and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. Lady Lake Police Chief Steve Hunt lauded the officers for their skillful use of technology in resolving what could have easily become a more dangerous situation. "Our officers showed exceptional professionalism during a chaotic scene," Hunt said, as detailed by Villages-News, "Their decision to deploy the drone allowed us to quickly locate the individual and bring this situation to a safe conclusion. This is exactly how technology enhances public safety."
