An intense high-speed chase that occurred on Christmas Day along Interstate 95 in Florida ended in a violent collision, resulting in serious injuries for a Florida Highway Patrol trooper. The pursuit began when the driver of the vehicle, now identified as 19-year-old Sundara Esperanza Garza, was spotted by officials swerving and speeding through Volusia County and refused to stop, as reported by NBC Miami.
The chase subsequently led the trooper and Garza into Titusville where both vehicles veered off the road, striking a guardrail. Struck the guardrail, the vehicles ran off the roadway, according to WESH. The trooper suffered injuries significant enough to require airlift transport to the hospital, though he was conscious and able to speak following the incident.
Witnesses reported the chase with one detailing a perilous scene, claiming she saw the vehicle "going 'at least 100' mph" and had a premonition that "something bad was going to happen." Her fears were realized as the chase culminated in the crash, with an arrest affidavit later revealing the vehicle's speed had reached 140 mph.
Garza, the driver, is now facing seven total charges including reckless driving and operating a vehicle with a suspended license. Caught in the crash, Garza faces multiple charges, including those stemming from driving with a suspended license, NBC Miami reported. Additionally, 21-year-old passenger Yazmin Barber was discovered to have an active arrest warrant out of Broward County. Traffic on the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 was disrupted but reopened around 1:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon, as released by officials.
