The bustling waterways of Fort Lauderdale are set to become safer following the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's approval of a new boating safety zone along the Intracoastal Waterway. The affected stretch — running from the Oakland Park Boulevard Bridge to the Sunrise Boulevard Bridge — will soon enforce a slow-speed, minimum-wake status, typically translating to a speed limit between 5 and 9 miles per hour.
The decision to implement new speed restrictions is motivated by the need to address the high traffic and safety issues in one of South Florida's most frequented boating areas. According to the city's announcement, the updated regulations are set to take effect in January 2026, with FWC planning to place updated signage and begin a 30-day grace period focused on informing rather than penalizing boaters still adjusting to the new rules.
Mayor Dean Trantalis underscored the importance of this initiative, stating, "Fort Lauderdale’s waterways are among our most treasured assets, and this is an important safety measure." The move comes alongside advocacy efforts from the City of Fort Lauderdale following the tragic death of a teenager on a personal watercraft earlier this year, as mentioned on the city's website.
"This new boating zone is about protecting people, property and the natural environment," City Manager Rickelle Williams told Fort Lauderdale's official website. The initiative was propelled by concerted efforts from city leaders who aimed to to swiftly address public safety concerns. The new zone will also connect two existing no-wake zones and overlaps with a seasonal manatee protection area.
Local enforcement agencies stand behind the regulation. "Our goal is not to write tickets but to educate through enforcement; making your safety our priority," Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Bill Schultz was quoted saying in the city's press release. The zone is viewed as a measure that will significantly contribute to a safer waterway experience for residents and visitors alike.
In light of these developments, the City of Fort Lauderdale is reminding all boaters of the necessity to adhere to posted speed limits and remain vigilant to ensure collective safety on the water.
