A reported theft at The Galleria on Monday spiraled into a dramatic chase off mall property, ending at a gas station on Westheimer near Chimney Rock, where multiple people were arrested. Witnesses said officers and security swept through the crowded Uptown complex as the pursuit spilled onto the busy roadway, briefly disrupting evening shopping and leaving parts of the mall interior in disarray.
According to KHOU, Houston Police said the suspects ran from a theft inside the mall and were chased by officers down Westheimer. The pursuit wrapped up at a nearby gas station close to Chimney Rock, where several suspects were taken into custody. HPD told the station it had not yet confirmed which store was targeted and had not released information on possible charges or whether anyone was injured. The outlet noted its report was updated late Monday evening as investigators continued working the scene.
Galleria Security Back Under The Microscope
The Galleria has already seen its share of headlines this year, with incidents ranging from a shoplifter who leapt from the second floor onto the mall’s ice rink in June to shootings and other theft calls that prompted extra patrols. That history has led to more off-duty officers and private guards being assigned to the center, Click2Houston reported earlier. The continued string of incidents has kept safety and security at the top of the conversation for shoppers and nearby residents.
What HPD Is Saying So Far
HPD told KHOU that multiple off-duty officers working security inside the mall responded to the theft call and helped during the chase and arrests. The department said the mall interior was left with “a large mess” after the incident. Investigators have not yet publicly identified the suspects or filed formal charges, and HPD said more information would be released as it becomes available.
