A GameStop store in Grapevine, Texas set a record when a customer traded in a PSA 10 Holo Gengar Pokémon card valued at about $33,883. The store provided $30,494.70 for the card, as reported by FOX 26 Houston.
GameStop reported that the card went through inspection and verification before the trade was approved. The transaction shows the growing legitimacy and financial potential of the trading card market.
GameStop responded to criticism about its trade-in values by saying, "Furthermore, any trolls who publicly claim that GameStop trade-in values are bad are hereby factually and demonstrably incorrect. Any prior and ongoing objections to our trade values are now deemed without merit and factually invalid." The company made the statement after a high-value Pokémon card trade, though the previous owner of the card was not identified. The trade came before GameStop’s “Trade Anything Day” promotion. A similar Gengar card recently sold on eBay for just under $34,353.80. GameStop offers an in-store process for checking card values, and ended its message with "Power to the Players," according to My San Antonio.
