Last Friday, Good Samaritans of Garland, commonly known as Good Sam, embarked on a new chapter with the official acquisition of the former Walnut Creek Branch Library's keys. The building, situated at 3319 Edgewood Drive, is poised to be transformed into a food distribution center to accommodate Good Sam's increasing service demands. The key handoff signals the advancement of a collaborative effort made last year between Good Sam and the City of Garland, which aimed to amplify their capacity to serve the local community effectively.

Good Sam's previous premises at 214 N. 12th St. in Downtown Garland had become too cramped to properly manage the growing influx of those in need. Meanwhile, the City had been vigorously working to construct the new West Garland Library on Walnut Street, destined to replace the Walnut Creek Branch Library and to expansively serve west Garland residents. In a mutually beneficial agreement, the City opted to purchase Good Sam's downtown property and, in turn, set out to forever change the former library into a lease for Good Sam.

According to a statement by Garland Library Director Karen Archibald, "I’m thrilled that this library building will have a new life continuing to serve the Garland community through the vital services Good Sam provides. Our library team couldn’t be happier for the Good Sam team, and we’re excited to see this space remain a place of support, connection and care for our residents." This sentiment underscores the enthusiasm shared among the City officials and Good Sam regarding the transition, as per the City of Garland.
