After months of construction and detours, Governor Kathy Hochul recently proclaimed the completion of a $61.8 million infrastructure project aimed at revitalizing a key segment of the I-95, known as the New England Thruway, spanning from the Bronx to Westchester County. According to an announcement on the Governor's Office official website, the significant investment included resurfacing 24 lane miles and revamping 11 bridges and ramps, catering to approximately 120,000 vehicles that traverse this route daily.
Driving it home, Governor Hochul emphasized, "Every day, tens of thousands of drivers rely on the New England Thruway," underscoring the importance of infrastructure investments to ensure a "smoother, safer and more reliable" experience on roadways. In a region where driving can often be a test of patience, such improvements signal a respite that connects businesses and neighborhoods, revives infrastructure, and, by proxy of improved conditions, potentially stimulates the local economy, as per the Governor's Office.
Starting in the spring of 2023, the State Thruway Authority undertook this major initiative by undertaking full-depth pavement repairs, which essentially stripped the most weathered parts of the roadway down to its subbase over a four-mile stretch. They then installed a sleek two-course asphalt overlay and brighter pavement markings, as touted by New York State Thruway Authority Executive Director Frank G. Hoare, stating the work "means improved safety, drivability for motorists, and investment to ensure connection and access," according to the Governor's Office.
As part of the bustling Bronx, the project tended to two pedestrian bridges previously aged over six decades, near Co-Op City, boosting connectivity for the residential zones therein. These bridges now boast raised clearance, which, combined with the new superstructures of steel beams, concrete deck, and fencing, aims to curtail incidents of vehicular bridge strikes.
The project is merely one phase in a larger plan under Governor Hochul to overhaul key infrastructure across the state. April 2025 marked the onset of an additional $86.7 million pavement improvement project further north on I-95 in Westchester County, set to wrap up by 2026's end. State Senator Nathalia Fernandez acknowledged the project as a "meaningful investment" for those reliant on I-95's offerings, and Assemblymember Amy Paulin lauded the outcome of providing a "smoother, safer ride."
Concluding with a nod to safety, Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins appreciated the project's sweeping scope. He remarked on its significance not only for residents and commuters but also for visitors and businesses leveraging I-95 to remain interconnected. "By rehabilitating critical bridges and resurfacing this heavily traveled corridor, we are strengthening safety, improving reliability, and modernizing infrastructure," Jenkins said, as indicated in the Governor's Office announcement.
