Governor Greg Abbott has earmarked a substantial $4.8 million grant for the Texas Quantum Institute (TQI) at The University of Texas at Austin, provided from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF). Announced recently, this grant facilitates the creation of QLab, a state-of-the-art quantum-enhanced semiconductor metrology facility slated to rise in Austin. QLab's mission is to bring cutting-edge measurement science to the semiconductor manufacturing process, bolstering Texas's stature as a burgeoning hub for technological advancement.
Emphasizing the significance of the grant, Governor Abbott stated, "Texas is the new frontier of innovation and UT Austin is where world-changing discoveries in quantum research and development are being made," as per the Office of the Texas Governor. Following his words, the Governor added, "Through this TSIF grant, QLab will acquire state-of-the-art instrumentation that will be used to advance semiconductor manufacturing in Texas by leveraging new developments in quantum science and technology." This investment from TSIF, providing the resources needed by UT Austin to enhance metrology tools, aims to tackle key challenges within the semiconductor industry.
The QLab initiative will benefit Texas's semiconductor sector and the burgeoning quantum industries, nurturing academic research. QLab falls under the management of the Texas Quantum Institute and will collaborate closely with the Microelectronic Research Center (MRC), Texas Institute for Electronics (TIE), and Texas Materials Institute (TMI), which are integral components of UT Austin's robust R&D ecosystem. According to a statement made by the Governor's office, TQI Co-director Elaine Li expressed gratitude for the continuous support from the State of Texas and UT Austin, citing metrology as a crucial enabling technology for the semiconductor industry.
Senator Sarah Eckhardt also recognized UT Austin's role in advancing the regional technological landscape, stating, “The innovative work of the faculty and researchers at UT Austin has helped make Central Texas a national hub for semiconductor innovation.” Additionally, Co-director Xiuling Li shared an optimistic view on QLab's potential impact, "This investment gives us tremendous momentum to advance quantum-enhanced semiconductor metrology, driving breakthroughs that will shape the future of both the semiconductor and quantum industries," Xiuling Li told the Office of the Texas Governor. The project promises to fuel regional economic growth with the creation of high-paying advanced manufacturing positions.
