The GPD Group, in partnership with the City of Akron, has announced a substantial commitment to maintain its national headquarters in Downtown Akron's southside, an initiative promising to bring long-term economic and employment growth to the area. As reported by the City of Akron in a statement, the structural engineering and architecture firm plans to sustain and expand its presence, adding approximately 120 professional jobs over the coming five years, boosted by a current local payroll exceeding $50 million.
With roots in Akron dating back to 1961, GPD Group has been a pillar in the architecture and engineering industry, now boasting over 900 employees across 14 offices nationwide. The company's further growth will capitalize on additional space of more than 260,000 square feet in downtown Akron. GPD Group President Darrin Kotecki noted the firm's long-standing relationship with the city, saying, "We are excited to solidify our presence in Akron and to continue supporting the community through our work, our Foundation, and our volunteerism," in a statement obtained by the City of Akron's news release.
The City of Akron is backing the firm's endeavors with commitments for infrastructural upgrades intended to support this burgeoning growth. These plans include the renovation of South Main Street by the end of 2028, aiming to foster an environment conducive to GPD Group's long-term success. According to Akron Mayor Shammas Malik, "GPD Group's impressive commitment to Downtown Akron reflects exactly the kind of long-term partnership that strengthens our city's future," as detailed in the aforementioned release.
Additional improvements by the City involve enhancements to city-owned parking lots for the benefit of GPD Group employees and visitors. As part of their support strategy, the City will also oversee efficiency upgrades to Akron Energy Systems, vital for heating and cooling of Downtown areas, and initiate a five-year Energy Consumption Reduction Fund to help offset associated expenses. These gestures aim to match the fervor evident in GPD Group’s own proactive contributions to the community, encompassing not only substantial economic impact but also a notable history of corporate charity and volunteerism.
GPD Group, heralded for its broad-based employee ownership and civic-minded ethos, has played a significant role in shaping Akron's commercial landscape, contributing to its reputation as a hub for professional development and community outreach. The GPD Employees' Foundation, as cited by the City of Akron, has impacted over 2.5 million children through its philanthropic endeavors, reflecting the firm's commitment to fostering a positive community dynamic extending well beyond its business operations.
