Three people were wounded early Saturday when someone opened fire on their car in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood, leaving all of them in fair condition, police said.
The shooting happened just before 12:30 a.m. in the 8100 block of South Stewart Avenue, according to authorities. Two women, ages 21 and 26, and a 25-year-old man were inside the vehicle when an unknown attacker started shooting, police said.
The 21-year-old woman was hit by a fragment in the back of her head, the 25-year-old man was shot in the arm and hand, and the 26-year-old woman was grazed in the abdomen and arm. The three drove themselves to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were listed in fair condition, according to ABC7 Chicago.
Chicago police responded to the scene shortly before 12:30 a.m. and said the shooter took off after the attack. No one was in custody as detectives from Area Two took over the case, according to details from the Chicago Police Department reported by FOX 32 Chicago.
Neighborhood context and citywide trends
Chatham has seen several shootings in recent months, a string of violence that has residents and local leaders on edge. At the same time, Chicago police data show that shootings and homicides are down significantly across the city through 2025. WTTW has reported that both categories dropped by more than 30 percent in the first half of the year.
Yet even with that drop, reporting by WBEZ has highlighted low clearance rates for nonfatal shootings, a stubborn problem that has frustrated both victims and investigators and left many neighborhoods feeling like justice is in short supply.
What the police are asking
Police have not released a description of the shooter and are asking anyone with information to contact Area Two detectives, authorities said. No arrests have been reported in the case so far, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
