Authorities in Harris County have uncovered an alleged rooster fighting operation in Crosby, following a tip from a concerned community member. According to the KPRC 2 News report, the discovery was made last evening at a residence on Danek Road, where deputies found about 300 live roosters and roughly 50 dead.
The tip-off to law enforcement came around 2:30 p.m., enabling deputies to rapidly respond to the situation. Upon arrival, they were greeted with the cacophonous sounds of roosters, and some individuals attempted to hastily leave the scene. Sgt. Clinton Nash, from the Harris County Sheriff's Office, was quoted saying, "We didn't know two properties around the back were opened up, so that's when we locked down the scene," in an interview obtained by ABC13. Deputies then proceeded to detain and identify several people on the property.
The location included a mobile home and an adjacent open area, where deputies believe caged matches between roosters had been taking place. The homeowner and several other individuals connected to the operation were detained for questioning, but no arrests had been reported by either KPRC 2 News or ABC13 at the time of the initial reports. The fate of the roosters remains uncertain, although authorities expect the Humane Society of Harris County to take in the surviving birds.
The investigation is ongoing with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office gearing up to bring charges against the property owners and attendees of the events. "And started to realize what we all had with all the roosters and paraphernalia and all that stuff," Sgt. Clinton Nash told ABC13, indicating a wider scope of the investigation into the animal fighting ring. The case is drawing attention to the dark underground of animal cruelty and the efforts to combat it by local law enforcement agencies.
