Clark County officials unveiled a plan to modernize Harry Reid International Airport, including new gates, upgraded ticketing halls, and road projects to ease rideshare traffic. The phased overhaul covers Terminal 1, changes to Terminal 3’s ticketing level, and new multimodal centers for Uber, Lyft, and buses, aimed at accommodating growing visitor numbers.

Terminal 1 Gets a Pier-Style Expansion

Terminal 1, the airport’s oldest facility, would be rebuilt into a pier-style concourse, increasing gate capacity from 39 to about 65 by using the former Terminal 2 footprint, according to The Nevada Independent. County aviation staff told commissioners the work will be phased to keep existing gates open, with new concourses featuring larger hold rooms, updated wayfinding, and improved concessions, KTNV reports.

Ticketing And Terminal 3 Rework

Officials said Terminal 3’s ticketing level will be reconfigured to add about 30 check-in counters and curbside self-bag-drop lanes without expanding the building, according to 8 News Now. Ongoing airport projects include new baggage carousels, escalators, and hold-room improvements to ease bottlenecks as the master plan is finalized, according to Harry Reid Airport.

Roadwork, Rideshare Hubs And Traffic Flow

The plan includes terminal-to-terminal flyovers, a redesigned interchange separating commuter and airport traffic, and two multimodal centers—one near Paradise Road and Tropicana Avenue, another near I-215 and Sunset Road—to consolidate rideshare, buses, and employee parking, per The Nevada Independent. Officials say single-ride Uber and Lyft trips are a major source of congestion, and the hubs aim to move pickups off the terminal curbs, KTNV reported.

Timeline, Costs And Next Steps

Officials said the presentation is conceptual and will require airline approval, detailed engineering, and budget sign-offs before construction begins. The modernization is part of the Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport environmental review, with smaller projects already underway. Alstom has been contracted to upgrade the automated people mover system in an $84 million project to improve passenger connections during the broader renovation, according to the company.
