In a solemn recognition of one of the nation's most harrowing historical events, flags across Hawaii will fly at half-staff. Governor Josh Green has ordered this measure in remembrance of the lives lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The decree, in line with the President's direction, applies not only to the United States flag but also to the Hawaiʻi state flag. This act of remembrance is set to be observed from sunrise to sunset tomorrow, December 7, 2025.
Honoring the fallen, the survivors, and the unparalleled courage displayed in the attack's aftermath, state offices and Hawaiʻi National Guard facilities will assume this respectful position for the duration of the day. According to an announcement made on the Governor's official website, Governor Green expressed the gravity of this day, remarking, "Every year, we pause to honor the lives lost on December 7, 1941, and the extraordinary bravery shown in the hours and days that followed."
The Pearl Harbor National Memorial will serve as the central gathering place for a community united in remembrance and respect. Governor Green emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating, “The First Lady and I will join our community at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial as we remember the service members and civilians whose courage in a moment of unthinkable tragedy changed the course of history.” In a public statement, he further underscored the day’s importance, noting, “Their legacy calls us to strengthen our commitment to peace, unity and resilience.” Information regarding the flag-lowering directive, and the full statement by Governor Green, can be found on the official website of the Governor of Hawaiʻi.
