A Sunday ride on Kamehameha Highway turned serious for a 52-year-old moped rider, who was left with major injuries after crashing near Johnson Road, according to Honolulu emergency crews. Paramedics treated the helmetless rider at the scene, then rushed him to a nearby hospital with multiple injuries, including a head wound. Traffic lanes were briefly blocked while first responders worked the scene.
What Happened
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services reports that crews were dispatched at about 12:40 p.m., provided on-scene treatment, and then transported the man to a hospital for further care. The rider, identified only as a 52-year-old man, was not wearing a helmet and suffered multiple injuries, including to his head, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
Crash Spot And Recent Incidents
The collision took place on the Windward stretch of Kamehameha Highway near Johnson Road, a corridor that has seen several serious crashes involving two-wheel riders this year. In August, a 23-year-old moped rider died after colliding with a bus north of Johnson Road, an incident covered by Hawaii News Now, underscoring how unforgiving this route can be for vulnerable road users.
Helmet Rules And The Safety Debate
Hawaii law has long required helmets for moped riders under 18, and lawmakers this year took a fresh look at whether that protection should extend to all ages and all two-wheeled motorized vehicles. House Bill 537 would require operators and passengers of two-wheeled motorized vehicles to wear approved helmets, according to the bill text on the Hawaii Legislature website. The state Department of Transportation also publishes guidance and rules for mopeds and rentals that highlight how protections and requirements differ depending on the type of vehicle and situation. House Bill 537 and the Hawaii Department of Transportation's moped guidance lay out those distinctions for riders and rental operators.
Investigation And How To Help
Honolulu police and EMS responded to the crash, and investigators with the Honolulu Police Department's Traffic Division will work to determine exactly what happened. Anyone who saw the collision or has video of the incident is asked to contact the HPD Traffic Division as the investigation continues. Additional information for the public is available through the Honolulu Police Department.
