A Carlsbad mall is grappling with a serious breach of privacy after a visitor discovered a hidden camera in a unisex restroom last Saturday. The individual, who shared the incident on Instagram under the username @l_ac_l, found the camera disguised beneath a diaper dispenser in the restroom on the second floor, across from well-known retail stores Spencer’s and Journeys, according to an Instagram post.

The concerned citizen, identified only as "AC" in reports, immediately reported the finding to mall security at approximately 4:29 PM. Mall security swiftly secured the device until the Carlsbad Police were able to collect it as evidence. In an effort to assist authorities, AC urged people to come forward with any relevant information or to contact him for clarification. "Not for my own sake. It is more of a concern for the people. Families, kids… anybody who went into that restroom," AC told SanDiegoVille. He added that he would press charges if a suspect is apprehended, citing a deep-seated concern for especially the women and children who may have been recorded without their consent.

Carlsbad Police have taken the matter seriously, confirming to NBC 7 that a detective has been assigned to the case and that the incident is under thorough review. While the camera was collected as evidence, and no suspects have been identified yet, no further details have been disclosed on whether footage has been recovered from the device. Authorities have urged anyone who used the specified restroom or witnessed suspicious activities in the area on or around December 6 to contact the police immediately.

The shopping center, which recently changed hands and is in the midst of redevelopment efforts, now faces a critical moment in protecting customer security and rebuilding shopper trust. The Shoppes at Carlsbad were sold to Steerpoint Capital and SteelWave for $71.5 million, with significant plans for renovation that are now overshadowed by this incident. Rosina Boykin, a shopper at the mall, expressed her own concerns about privacy, telling NBC 7, "Hopefully they find something, or maybe they can beef up some security measures," further highlighting the bigger issue of public safety in shared spaces.
