A high-speed crash on Memorial Drive in Houston’s Memorial Park on Thursday night left one driver dead and another hospitalized. The two-vehicle collision happened around 8 p.m. near South Picnic Lane. Memorial Drive was closed while police and first responders worked at the scene. The Houston Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Division is investigating.
According to FOX 26 Houston, both vehicles were headed westbound on Memorial when one car, reportedly moving at a high rate of speed, slammed into another traveling at a normal speed. Police said the impact pushed the slower vehicle into the median and its driver was taken to a hospital.
The speeding vehicle spun out, struck an electric pole, and then crashed into a concrete barrier, investigators reported. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim's identity.
Click2Houston reported the wreck occurred in the 7400 block of Memorial Drive and cited an HPD post noting, "Central and VCD are working a two car crash 7100 Memorial" and that Memorial through the park was closed in both directions. Emergency crews stayed on scene into the night while utility and tow teams cleared debris and damaged infrastructure. So far, police have shared few details on contributing factors beyond speed.
What Investigators Are Looking At
Investigators with HPD's Vehicular Crimes Division are piecing together the crash, including whether excessive speed, lane changes or some other factor triggered the deadly sequence, FOX 26 Houston reported. Officers typically study vehicle damage, skid marks on the roadway and any available surveillance footage, and they interview witnesses to reconstruct what happened second by second. None of those findings have been released yet. Police say the probe is active and more information will be released when it is ready for the public.
Road Closures And Response
Click2Houston noted that Memorial Drive was shut down through the park while crews worked to remove the damaged light pole and concrete barrier, which created backups on surrounding streets as drivers were forced to detour. HPD said Central Patrol officers and the Vehicular Crimes Division were handling the scene.
Memorial Drive Crash History
The dangerous stretch of Memorial Drive has seen another deadly crash. On Thursday, a high-speed collision in Memorial Park left one driver dead and another hospitalized. This follows an earlier fatal crash on November 7 at 6801 Memorial Drive. Officials and residents say both incidents raise ongoing concerns about speed and driver behavior along the parkway.
HPD's investigation into the crash on Thursday is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact the department. The story will be updated as police and emergency officials release more details.
