Chandler's historic Dr. A.J. Chandler Park is set to receive a facelift starting January 2026. According to an announcement by the City Council, a plan that has been in the pipeline since 2017 will begin to roll out its first phase, aiming to rejuvenate the park with updated amenities and infrastructural improvements.

The park, a central hub in Downtown Chandler known for hosting over 100 events each year, has not seen significant updates since 1986. With the local area's growth in residential, office, and retail development, the park's infrastructure struggled to keep up. A new Master Plan was completed in 2017, and an update in 2024 tailored the blueprint to current needs and priorities. This includes the introduction of new seating areas, upgraded restrooms, and more event space.

Willmeng Construction, alongside Dibble Construction Management and Dig Studio, has secured the construction and professional services agreements, respectively. Improvements slated for phase one encompass the demolition of old features and construction of new hardscape plazas, modern park lighting, and upgraded power infrastructure, as well as pedestrian safety enhancements at the Arizona Avenue crossing.

Community engagement was a cornerstone of the planning process, with city staff consulting closely with the Downtown Chandler Community Partnership (DCCP) and local stakeholders. The upgrades not only target utility, but also comfort and aesthetics, featuring new pavilions, restrooms, storage spaces, and two large shade canopies that will augment the park's appeal as a venue for social activities. Seasonal plazas, event lawns, and improved shade tree infrastructure, including soil enhancements, are also on the agenda.

For those interested in the park's redevelopment, renderings and detailed information about the project are available for viewing and download on the Downtown Chandler website. Marketing and Communications Manager, Toni Smith, is listed as the media contact for further queries regarding the renovation.
